Don't Let Your Possessions Possess You

Have you seen the Leap Year movie? It's a good movie to watch. It's about a girl wanting to be engaged to her long time boyfriend. Unfortunately, her boyfriend doesn't seem to think about that so the girl tries to follow her boyfriend all the way to Dublin, Ireland to propose to him instead. The girl experienced different kinds of misfortune on her way, and met a irish man that would get her to Dublin.

This is where my topic would start. The said Irish man asked the girl a question when they were waiting for a train, "If you only had 60 seconds and your house is on fire, what would you save?". And I can't help myself and think of my answer to that. Of course, my rational side answered, when our house would be on fire, adrenaline.rush would start to kick in, I would try to save everything that I can.

I've seen news about victims of fire incidents and even a live telecast of houses or apartments on fire. People try to save a lot of things while the adrenaline rush is pumping. They would mostly say "I try to save what could be saved, I didn't think if I could even lift it. I just grab everything that I could".

Back in the movie, the girl can't seem to answer the question and asked the guy instead. This made me really think. Without the adrenaline rush thing, without those panic attack moments, what would I get? My answer would be none.

I would spend that 60 seconds trying to check whether my family and pets are safe. I won't even look for my phone or such. Material things seems to have a hold to us now. There are a lot of people who admits that they couldn't live without their phone, laptop, and such. My mom always told me that I won't be able to take these material things with me to afterlife or these things won't matter when I'm on my deathbed.

"Unnecessary possessions are unnecessary burdens. If you have them, you have to take care of them! There is great freedom in simplicity of living. It is those who have enough but not too much who are the happiest."

One thing I learn whenever I decide to clean my room... really clean my room is to always learn to let go. I don't have a big room so I have to limit myself for keeping "trash" in it. In Buddhism (I'm not a Buddhist), they say that attachment to things are suffering. I think I kind of get it. I try to stop holding on the things I own even if it becomes useless. Of course we would say that this things has some memories blablabla... Hmmm... Not really. You, have the memories, not that thing. It would all be in your mind. I'm not saying that we should throw all our memorabilia away. What I'm trying to say is, decide if it is really a memorabilia or just a useless trash.

There are people who thinks that possessions are also some kind of a power. I don't know what to think about that but somehow, I get what they're trying to say. These materials could give you some leverage. In society, they based how happy and lucky you are through your possessions. But are they really happy?

"Your most precious, valued possessions and your greatest powers are invisible and intangible. No one can take them. You, and you alone, can give them. You will receive abundance for your giving."
